General Mission Statement:
Independent Kentucky is here to provide an organizing center to support and assist the growth and development of the Independent movement. We continue to mobilize our base of Independent voters to support non-partisan solutions in place of partisan problems.
About Us:
Independent Kentucky started around two years ago (2008) when we were doing research as Independent voters in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As someone who wanted to become active in state politics there were no outlets for Independent-minded individuals. We found a large number of registered voters but with no origination. There is National and some State Independent parities but none in or around Kentucky. Kentucky has a broad classification for us; we are the “Other” voters. We viewed this as an opportunity to build a base for the Independent voters of the Commonwealth. This is how Independent Kentucky became the growing origination it is today.
Accomplishments:
Over the last 18 months we have been working on numerous campaigns for "Independent Voters".
2008 started the research and development process for our cause. “Finding an outlet for independent voters was impossible in the Commonwealth “stated Michael P.W. Lewis. We were able to establish a strong base Independent voters and past candidates to mobilize this movement to the forefront of Kentucky politics.
In March of 2009 we appeared in front of the house standing Committee on Elections, Constitutional Amendments, and Intergovernmental Affairs. They heard House Bill 17, requesting a change in Kentucky election laws to allow “Open Primaries” like 33 other states across the country allow.
In the summer and fall of 2009 we spent long hours building and developing contacts and building our foundation of Independent voters to organize our base and begin the creation of Independentkentucky.com
In November and December of 2009, we were called to action in support of Jimmy Higdon a long time Independent ally. Jimmy Higdon had supported open primaries and continues to support them and promised to file another bill in the Senate for “Open Primaries” for the upcoming 2010 session.
