SB 53 sponsor Senator Jimmy Higdon, contacted Independent Kentucky Chairman to inform him that primaries could open soon! As of now Kentucky excludes independent voters from partcipating in primaries. "In my opinion this could benifit both political parites and independent voters alike" stated Independent Kentucky Chairman Michael Lewis.
With Kentucky posting low voter turn out year after year, For example SB 53 could drive up the low 32% posted in a highly contested 2008 primary in an Presidential year. Kentucky has long been a "doesnt matter" state when it comes to Presidential elecetions. Kentucky with an open primary for independent voters could bring more national attention and spotlight for a state that has long been ignored. Independent voters are the largest growing demographic in the nation. It feels good to see Kentucky makes changes and not being the last to do so.
At this time we know there will be a hearing for SB 53 on Jan 13, 2010 the time is TBA. We look forward to chance at having a more then fair chance at getting SB 53 passed through the Senate, only time will tell, Will Kentucky adopt this progress voter reform?
