After hard work from Independent Kentucky and the Independent minded voters of this country, Senate bill 53 has passed the Senate subcommittee for state and local government. SB 53 is a bill that would mandate semi-open primaries in the state of Kentucky. It would allow tax paying, Independent registered voters an opportunity to vote in the primaries. The hearing was at noon on Wednesday, January 20th.

The sponsor of the bill, Senator Jimmy Hidgon, presented the bill and Chairman Damon Thayer recognized it. The discussion began, about 4 or 5 senators asked questions about the bill. Independent Kentucky Chairman, Michael P. W. Lewis, was present to answer questions regarding the bill. Chairman Thayer asked most of the questions.

Senator Elizabeth Tori raised concerns about the cost associated with the reprogramming of machines to accommodate the necessary changes, especially given the budget crisis. A statement from the State Board of Elections stated that the cost of the changes would be minimal. There was strong opposition from former Governor, current Senator, Julian Carroll.

The bill passed; 10 yeses, 1 no, and 1 pass.
