CNN aired a story about Independent Kentucky on Wednesday, February 3rd at 8:00 PM on the Campbell Brown show. The story was about the battle of Senate Bill 53, a bill that would allow semi-open primaries in Kentucky. Semi-open primaries are NOT a free-for-all. Democrats and Republicans would still only be allowed to vote in their own primaries. This bill would allow a registered Independent voter to pick a party and participate in the selection process.
Independent Kentucky was contacted by CNN about a week ago when they saw the work being done in Kentucky. CNN wanted to run a piece on Independent Kentucky and how they've rallied people together to support Senate Bill 53. They came to Kentucky for the Senate floor vote on SB 53 and to the Independent Kentucky monthly meeting. Chairman of Independent Kentucky, Michael P. W. Lewis, was followed around all day in the capitol and interviewed about his experience. CNN has allowed Independent Kentucky to link the story on their website:

Independent Voting in Kentucky Primaries: Senate Bill 53
During the past three decades, the issue of allowing independent voters to cast votes in party primaries has been introduced in several sessions of the Kentucky General Assembly.
In Kentucky, the General Assembly has the power to decide whether independent voters may participate in primaries. The Kentucky Constitution is silent regarding the primary nomination process of the general election. Section 153 of the Kentucky Constitution gives the General Assembly power to provide the manner of voting by rule of general law.
Senate Bill 53, a bill that would have allowed independents to vote in party primaries, was passed by the Kentucky Senate in 2010. This was the first time such a measure passed a chamber of the Kentucky General Assembly.

"Have you ever seen gas thrown on a fire, well thats what happend today! Independents will build off this like we always have" Stated Chairman Lewis after a expected defeat in the House where SB 53 went up against Democrat leadership. In an exchange after the hearing, Chairman Lewis and Rep Ron Weston (D-Louisville) discussed the lissues of this bill with Weston tellng Chairman Lewis that Independents disenfrancehise themselves then quickly turned and walked away.
An interesting turnout in todays hearing brought a member of the county clerks office, who opposed this bill. His reason were sounded more like a job complaint this, then acutal reasons to oppose this bill. He stated how hard it would be on the poll workers and the cost might not be as minimal as was thoguht. He was followed up by the Secretary of States office Sara Johnson, who also opposed this bill but only gave numbers on registration to the committee.
There was an unknown speaker who said she was a Co-Chair of the LaRue County GOP that spoke in support of the bill. However no one that has worked on this bill in the past has ever spoke with her or even knew she was coming to speak on behalf of the bill. She didn't make herself available for comment after the hearing and we were unable to verify his position within the county GOP.

Before you start to worry, Independent Kentucky meeting will be held Thursday June 24th!
We received some emails from worried friends that we did not have a June meeting. We know they are normally the first Tuesday of every month; however we had to cancel May because of commitments to the Chairman’s and board meetings, June's was moved back because of community events. There have been some request to change the meetings to Thursday’s and this will be voted on at July’s meeting which is scheduled for Thursday July 8th.
