Don’t worry about KRS! One additional REQUIREMENT in KRS 67C.103 is that these districts be as compact as possible.
"(3) Following the official publication of each decennial census by the United States Bureau of the Census for the area embraced by a consolidated local government, the council shall adopt an ordinance, if necessary, to redistrict the council districts. A redistricting ordinance shall provide for the distribution of population among the council districts as nearly equal as is reasonably possible. Every council district shall be compact and contiguous and shall respect existing neighborhood, community, and city boundaries whenever possible."
Have you seen a district map? There is no way our elected official are following the law on this. It seems the hyper partisan tension is Kentucky will continue to grow with political maneuvering of this nature.

We have been receiving numerous calls and emails about Independent Kentucky’s Semi Open Primary bill current status. Let’s get it out there. Sen. Jimmy Higdon has not filed the bill and won’t be for the 2012 session. Independent Kentucky has talked with Independent Senator Bob Leeper who has confirmed he will sponsor the bill. However we as a group have to give Sen. Leeper support and make sure we are calling and emailing our Legislators about the issue. We have 2400 signatures from Kentuckians on a petition in support of opening Kentucky’s primaries with our Semi Open Primary legislation but we need those people who have signed the petition to get active one more time and call or email their Legislators! Chairman Lewis made a short video in 2011 that shows how easy it is to leave a message for your State Representative or Senator (Link below). Will you answer the call to make the call?

Independent Kentucky shot footage of Chairman Lewis calling the Legislative Message Line in 2011. The footage was never used but recycled for this year’s Legislative Call to Action.
In the 2:48 video it shows Chairman Lewis was able to leave a message for State Representative Jim Wayne to support 2011’s SB 41 (Semi Open Primary bill) in only 1:48! This Call to action is about getting people involved. We can change Frankfort and Kentucky’s political process if they hear YOUR voice!

Since our meetings with Congressman John Yarmuth in the Fall of 2011, we have been organizing a Public Forum. Former independent Louisville Council member Prof. Deonte Hollowell has offered to help get us get a student group to sponsor the event. We are in communications with Congressman Yarmuths scheduler to come up with some open dates for him to participate.
We expect the discussion to cover Kentucky’s Primary systems and look at other States to compare the differences. Currently there are 34 States that have some form of Open Primary system. 6 of the 7 States surrounding Kentucky have some form of Open Primary… West Virginia is the only State using the same Closed Primary system.
We will be updating this event over the next few days, so please check back for updates! |

A key volunteer involved with the production of “IK LIVE!” has had a medical emergency in which we have no choice but to cancel tonight’s meeting. Chairman Lewis sent out this message earlier.
“Unfortunately we are shorthanded when it comes to volunteers with our IK LIVE production. This is a blow to the organization and the people that have been working on it for the last month; however we are confident that the next weeks show will go off without a hitch. We deeply apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause any of our supporters.
Again our apologies for the inconvenience! |
